Den teknologi vi använder för att kommunicera förändrar det som kommuniceras och hur det uppfattas. Inom undervisning har föreläsningen och den svarta tavlan dominerat. Tavlans betydelse har uppfattats sedan länge Josiah F. Bumstead skrev redan 1841 om tavlans uppfinnare:

The inventor of the system deserves to be ranked among the best contributors to learning science, if not the greatest benefactors of mankind.

Ett av svarta tavlans egenskaper är den korta tid då budskapet består. En ovanlig utställning “Bye Bye Blackboard…from Einstein and Others” vid Museum of the History of Science. Ett av deras mest stolta objekt är en tavla som Einstein använde under en föreläsning 1931.

Blackboards were wiped after use: they were meant for immediate communication, not for record. Even as they were being used, their messages were continuously revised, erased and renewed. But when Einstein came to Oxford in 1931, he was already an international celebrity. After one of his lectures a blackboard was preserved and has become a kind of relic. It is the most famous object in this Museum.

Also, the medium itself changed the dynamics of class interactions, not only those between students and professor, but also the interaction between students themselves.
